The Washington Post just published this article on how to prepare an older house for the next gigantic earthquake by bolting it to its foundation. They also mentioned that Seattle is about 100 years overdue for a big one.
"Big Ones occur here about every thousand years, much less frequently than in California. The last one occurred in what is now Seattle 1,100 years ago. By the geologic clock, this city is due for a catastrophic shake"
